All joking aside, don’t you think there MUST be some kind of mental issue going on for people to do these kinds of things?

And I checked three bibles. None of them say that true believers will pick up poisonous snakes, they all say snakes. So why not start using garter snakes from now on and avoid things like this?

Of course, there is still that verse about drinking poison.

indeed its a mass delusional psychosis that afflicts these poor people, my beef with their affliction is they want our kids taught according to their sickness as well as letting their sickness influence and if left up to them, run our government along their sicknesses prescribed guidelines….. i still get a chuckle thinking that we cut tax breaks (thus stealing funds for schools) for these yahooos and their holy snake charming… the whole spinning ball of wax throws off only nuts !!

I hate to be that guy, but I have to point out that snakes are venomous, not poisonous. In fact, one could hypothetically ingest rattlesnake venom and not be overly harmed by it. Venom is toxic in the bloodstream, and poison is toxic in the digestive system. Despite the translation errors of the aforementioned passage, one COULD ‘pick up deadly snakes and drink venom with no harm.’ I am in no way, however, defending the unintelligent actions carried about by Wolford et al.

  Mr. Alexander, thank you for pointing that out. I went into the comments on this comic to make the same point. Glad to know I’m not the only person annoyed by the confusion of these two words.

The thing is, I’ve met snake handlers. Not the religious type, but people who actually work with snakes for a living. Rattlesnakes are actually very calm animals and pretty easy to tame. Once they get used to the idea that you aren’t going to hurt them, they consider a human picking them up to be a somewhat squirmy heat rock. So snake-handling uses tame snakes and usually doesn’t have any issues. However, as anyone who’s had cats can tell you, there comes a day when you pick up a perfectly tame animal and its not feeling well or you squeeze a sore spot and it bites. The difference is, cats can’t kill if they bite from being mishandled.

Ironically, after thousands of years of this practice weeding out the weak members of the congregation, allowing the strongest to survive, they evolved into an offshoot species of venom-resistant super-christians.

You mentioned garter snakes. I tried it, but then the damn thing pooped on me! So how in the hell am I supposed to prove I really have faith? I know lots of folks have tried healing the sick and raising the dead, even walking on water. I’ve been trying to move a mountain, it’s a small one, well actually it’s a pile of dirt in my back yard, but it’s been there for years and packed pretty hard. I’ve been prayin’ every day, “be gone! And be ye cast into the rich neighbors pool!” No success yet.

Sometimes I get the feeling God isn’t listening or doesn’t care, or, God forbid, he isn’t real. There is one other alternative, I could live like a good and decent person and show my faith by my good deeds? Nah.

Actually, i read that you can drink venom of a snake and not have any ill effects. It’s when it enters the blood stream n such.
