This cartoon actually impacted me a lot.

It reminds me of the piece of shit pastor from the church my family and I used to attend many years ago when I was still a young and naive Christian. You see, I’ve had a speech impediment since age 8, but with years of speech therapy and inner resolve to overcome said impediment, my stutter has become very mild, but is still there.

I remember once after a Sunday service asking my pastor about how god can grant miracles and make the impossible possible and the like. I asked him if god can take away my stutter by praying. His response was that if you have enough faith and pray hard enough, god will answer your prayers. Needless to say, after being so young and gullible, I prayed and prayed for god to remove my speech impediment, but to no avail. Some time much later, I again was talking to my pastor about the same subject as before. You know what his response was this time? He actually told me to my face that I didn’t have enough faith and needed to pray harder with more sincerity and humility. Imagine a grown ass man telling this to a young child. I remember being genuinely crushed and confused. This was one probably the very first domino to fall, so to speak, that caused the chain reaction to my becoming the happy atheist that I am today.

Your cartoon shows how biased these people are. On one hand, god loves you and has a plan, but on the other hand your current predicament is punishment for your sins. It’s just despicable to me.

That’s the key to every religious scam Matt- it’s NEVER the fault of the non-existent Gahd. Oh yeah- Faith is everything- provided you’ve got enough of it; apparently the faithful never have enough.

Your pastor did a poor job here. God is NOT a Genie in a bottle that solves ALL our problems by faith and prayer. He even told Paul, author of more the half the New Testament, that “My grace is enough for you.” Paul never mentions what his weakness or problem was, only that God’s didn’t heal him because His grace was enough. Sometimes we are made stronger through our weaknesses.

Matt, my stutter still comes back hardcore when I don’t get enough sleep. It’s embarrassing and it pisses me off. I’ve become super pro at replacing words on the spot!

  I too have a range of quite low-level speech problems that can make themselves known when I’m sleep-deprived. Replacing words on the fly is a vital skill when I stutter and stall on one.
  
  I even get the occasional brief snatch of echolalia and glossolalia – omg, wait, isn’t that speaking in tongues? Gahd must have a plan for me! I’m special!

This comic and Matt’s response hit the nail on the head. Anyone who’s inclined to talk about faith or miracles in the context of healing should be directed to whywontgodhealamputees.com, a refreshingly straightforward rebuttal to the endless talk about why God does or doesn’t “choose” to heal people. It’s telling that God never “chooses” to heal conditions (like lost limbs) that have no history of occasionally resolving themselves.

Lifechanging in a negative way event occurs because:

A) Kid shakes more than twice. Ergo- Jesus gets teed off.

B) Jesus has a reason. Ergo- Jesus is a sick f**k.

Conclusion- Bad things happen to good people- because: God is a Sadistic Bastard.

Sorry to hear about your power issues. I’ve been lucky and only had it off for 41 hours earlier this week. Other people are still without. Thing is I live in a suburb that has the most churches per capita in the state. You’d think that would offer some protection.

There is no truth in what you just said. And even by saying that, you are telling me your not a believer. Like i said BEFORE you have to be a believer which your are not. To put it in simple terms if you want to believe ENOUGH you have to have god in your heart and accept that he is the savior and he died on the cross for you, no amount of praying or going to church will make you believe let alone believe ENOUGH.

And to further address the comic above god is not some tyrant that sits in heaven damning people to hell. He also does not not punish you for sins, he might reward you but he wont punish you, god gives you free will and if he didn’t WANT you to sin you wouldn’t .

he wouldn’t stop the rapist or murderer because its there FREEWILL if he stopped them they wouldn’t have FREEWILL and it effects the innocents persons life not because they deserve it but because the bad person did it out of FREEWILL. You also said “if i knew it and could stop it i would”. Now addressing that, i think you and god are 2 completely different people so to compare yourself to god like that is completely beyond reason why you would say that i have no idea. And once again my omnipotent god COULD stop it yes, but if he did so he would violate people having FREEWILL. That word FREEWILL look it up. Thanks

I’m going to ignore my own advice about feeding the trolls, but I have some free time. As I addressed in a previous comic, (beautifully I might add) if you say that the moral thing to do when watching a child being raped and tortured, or any other such crime, is to intervene, then your god is not moral. You also forfeit your claim that you derive your morality from god if you say that intervention is the right thing to do.

Also, based on your comment, I would assume that your god does not intervene in human affairs when it comes to the commission of crimes. For example, a few years back, an assassination attempt was made on Pope John Paul II. The assassin failed and the Pope claimed that god (actually Mary) altered the path of the bullet; it was a true miracle.

Now I’m sure many Christians discount this on the basis that Catholics aren’t real Christians and god wouldn’t intervene on their behalf because they’re the Whore of Babylon or some other such nonsense, but are you willing to say that miraculous interventions like this never occur because god doesn’t violate free will?

Lastly, does your god have free will? If he does, and if he chooses to sit idly by while watching a child get raped or murdered, then I would submit that the entity that you call god is not only malevolent, but downright sadistic, and perhaps evil.

Just imagine if God intervened in every little thing that happened, if god did this then there would be NO sin, if there was no sin then everyone would be perfect if everyone was perfect there would have been no reason for god to die on the cross, if god didn’t die on the cross then he wouldn’t have needed to be on earth.
3. god does sometimes intervene in things if you don’t believe me check out a book called heaven is for real. This book is about a young boy that had a serious form of cancer, he then said that he died and went up to heaven and was cured
4. i’m sure you have also heard of many story’s were terrible things happened to peoples family members or close friends and a lot of these people still have faith in god and trust in him or say i know this is part of gods big plan
5. My god is not evil or sadistic, I know he is not because he died on the cross for me and for you and for everyone and he loves us all dearly. He does not want all of this crap that goes on to happen its just that he gives us a choice to do right from wrong

That is ridiculous circular logic. God gives people free will knowing that there will be evil, or he is not omnipotent. When he sees that what he knew was going to happen does happen instead of an easy fix he decides that he has to kill himself for people doing what he knew they were going to do.
Is there evil in heaven? No. Is there free will in Heaven? Yes. So if it works there what is the issue with it working on Earth?
If someone is getting raped in heaven will God intervene?

Yippy! I’ve been waiting for this reply! You claim in ONE argument that god has a Devine plan for us and that we have free will. These are both foundational tenants of any Christian faith I have ever heard of. Here’s the funny thing, they are mutually exclusive! If god has a plan for us, free will matters not. If we have free will, we can only exercise it if god keeps his hands off. Please, please, please tell me which half of your religion is full of crap.
