I remember reading that one key difference between the Biblical version of this story and the one from the Quran is that in the bible Isaac gets tricked into being a sacrifice while in the Quran Ishmael volunteers. Can’t say I’m a fan of the message either way, but it’s nice to see that by the time Mohammad came around people realized how fucked up that story was and gave it a minor revision.

The only good thing about that story is the opportunity it gave to Wilfred Owen “…And the old man would not so, but slew his son, And half the seed of Europe one by one.” (Great setting of that in Britten’s War Requiem too!)

I’ve always found it ironic from a certain perspective that the people that say they love god the most, have the hardest time understanding god. i.e. What it means to be omnipotent, all-powerful and how that would mean what you do, and more importantly really, don’t have to do. Like test people, things and theory. Because, you already know.

I actually have a more charitable view of the Abraham story than I used to. Yes, if you look at the Bible the way a fundamentalist does then yeah, its horrific. But look at it as a mythological story and it becomes much more interesting. What is the point of this myth/story? Well it is essentially the story for why the Hebrews stopped human sacrifices, which they, like all of their neighbors, indulged in from time immemorial. That’s progress!
